Poem

a thousand moons ago

Original in Spanish

We have seen each other only once,my beauty,and that one look has been enoughto understand we have already known each othersince a thousand moons ago

I recognize that fire in your eyes,dazzling in the darknessI recognize the soft brush of your hand,generous, open, tenderI recognize the pounding of your restless breastupon my proud chest

How long I had been searching for you,my beauty,to share myself with you!

Were you, perhaps, searching for me too?Do you not recognize the brush of my handupon your cheek damp with sweat?Do you not remember the caress of my breathupon your mouth?Do you not remember, my beauty,our love?

So many kindred things unite us:not symmetry, but harmony;not copy, but complement

We have known each other for a thousand years,my beauty, and a thousand times beforethis life we have loved each other;

That is why my heart opened to you so readily,like a flower before the light of the sun

That is why your heart gave itself to mewithout hesitation, like a moth that immolates itselfin the fire of the flame

Because our love,the one that now is rebornfrom the ashes of the past,has joined us many times, long before,beyond this time and place,in this same embrace…
